How Today Works

Professor Matias is out sick today. This lab is fully self-guided. Work through each tab left to right.

New to the terminal? The terminal is a text-based way to control your computer. You type commands, press Enter, and the computer responds with text. You will see a $ symbol at the start of each line. That is the prompt. You type after it. Every command is written out for you. Just copy and paste.
Work with a partner. Find someone sitting near you and go through this together. Two sets of eyes catch errors faster.
Required

You Need a $20/month Plan

Everyone in this class must be on either Claude Pro ($20/mo) or ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo). If you are not on one of these plans, sign up right now. You cannot complete this lab or the rest of the course without one. Pick whichever you already have.
Choose Your Tool

Claude Code or Codex?

Both tools do the same thing: read your project files, write code, run commands, and push to GitHub. Each is available as a web app (easiest) and as a terminal CLI (more powerful). Pick based on your plan.

Claude Code

Requires Claude Pro — $20/mo

Web: claude.ai/code

CLI: terminal on your laptop

Also: desktop app, mobile

Codex

Requires ChatGPT Plus — $20/mo

Web: chatgpt.com/codex

CLI: terminal on your laptop

Also: IDE extensions, iOS

Pick your tool above. The tutorial adapts for your choice.

1 Open Your Terminal

Press Cmd + Space, type Terminal, press Enter.

Press Win + X, click Terminal or PowerShell.

Terminal
$

This is what your terminal looks like. The $ is the prompt. You type after it.

2 Install GitHub CLI

First check if already installed:

$ gh --version

See a version? Skip to Step 3. Otherwise:

$ brew install gh
$ winget install --id GitHub.cli

Close and reopen terminal after installing.

brew or winget not found?

Mac: Install Homebrew first: /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"

Windows: Download directly from cli.github.com

3 Install Your AI Agent

Claude Code CLI

Install or login failed?

"npm not found" — Install Node.js 22+ from nodejs.org first.

"permission denied" — Try: sudo npm install -g @openai/codex

Nothing works? Switch to the Web App path. Go to chatgpt.com/codex instead.

CLI Checkpoint

gh --version → shows version

claude --version → shows version

codex --version → shows version

All working? Go to the GitHub tab.

Step 2 of 5

Connect to GitHub

Used the Web App path? You already connected GitHub in Setup. Do Step 2 (set your identity) below, then skip to Warm-Up.

1 Log Into GitHub from Terminal

$ gh auth login

Answer the prompts:

Terminal
$ gh auth login ? What account do you want to log into? GitHub.com ? What is your preferred protocol? HTTPS ? Authenticate Git with your GitHub credentials? Yes ? How would you like to authenticate? Login with a web browser ! First copy your one-time code: ABCD-1234 Press Enter to open github.com in your browser... ✔ Authentication complete. ✔ Logged in as YourUsername

It shows a code and opens your browser. Paste the code, click Authorize, done.

Something went wrong?

"already logged in" — Fine. Move on.

Browser did not open — Copy the URL from terminal into your browser manually.

2 Set Your Git Identity

Replace with your real name and Rollins email:

$ git config --global user.name "Your Name" $ git config --global user.email "yourname@rollins.edu"

3 Clone Your Team's Repo

$ cd ~/Desktop $ gh repo clone YOUR-ORG/YOUR-REPO-NAME $ cd YOUR-REPO-NAME
Terminal
$ gh repo clone my-team/impact-project Cloning into 'impact-project'... remote: Enumerating objects: 42, done. Receiving objects: 100% (42/42), done. $ cd impact-project $ git status On branch main nothing to commit, working tree clean
Get your repo URL from your team. Ask in your group chat. It looks like: your-org/your-repo-name
Cloning failed?

"not found" — Check the URL. Make sure you are added as collaborator (Settings → Collaborators).

"already exists" — Just cd YOUR-REPO-NAME.

No repo yet? One person creates it on github.com and adds teammates.

Step 3 of 5

Warm-Up: Your First Agent Task

A guided task to learn how the tool works. About 15 minutes.

1 Launch the Agent

Claude Code

Web app: You should already be at claude.ai/code with your repo loaded. Type in the chat box.

CLI: Make sure you are in your repo folder, then run:

$ claude

First time: opens your browser to sign in with your Claude Pro account. After that:

claude — impact-project
╭─────────────────────────────────────────╮ │ Claude Code │ │ │ │ /help for commands │ │ Type your message... │ ╰─────────────────────────────────────────╯ >

Codex

Web app: You should be at chatgpt.com/codex with your repo connected. Type in the task box.

CLI: Make sure you are in your repo folder, then run:

$ codex
codex — impact-project
Codex v1.2.0 Working directory: ~/Desktop/impact-project Type a message to get started, or / for commands >
The agent asks for permission. When it wants to create a file or run a command, it asks first. Read what it wants to do. Press Enter to approve or type n to deny.

2 Create a README

Type this (customize the brackets):

Type This

Create a README.md for this project. It is called [YOUR PROJECT NAME], a [one sentence] built for [partner name]. Include: Project Description, Team Members, Getting Started, Tech Stack. Keep it simple.

The agent shows you the file. Review it. Approve when it asks.

This is the pattern. You describe what you want. The agent writes code. You review and approve.

3 Make a Change

Type This

Add my name to team members: [Your Name] - [Your Role]. Add a "Project Status" section: "Week 11: Setting up development environment and starting first build tasks."

4 Commit and Push

Type This

Commit these changes with the message "Add project README with team info and status" and push to GitHub.

Verify: Open your repo on github.com. You should see README.md on the main page.

Stuck?

"git push" rejected — Tell the agent: "Pull latest from GitHub then push."

Agent made a mistake — Tell it: "That is wrong. Change X to Y."

Agent crashed — Run claudecodex again. Files are saved.

Step 4 of 5

Execute Your First Project Task

Open your project plan from Lab 6. Pick the first task. You have about 30 minutes.

"Do not start by listing features. Give the agent a one-sentence description. Let it ask you questions."

Lab 6: Project Plan Creation

1 Pick Something Small

Good First Tasks (30 min)Too Big
Create project folder structureBuild the whole app
Write the landing page HTMLFull website with login
Build one prompt templateAll prompts for all features
Create sample test dataFull database

2 Give Context

Template

I am working on [PROJECT NAME] for [PARTNER]. It is [one sentence]. My first task: [paste task + acceptance criteria from your plan]. Ask me 3-5 clarifying questions before you start building.

3 Review and Iterate

  • "Show me the file structure"
  • "That is wrong. Change X to Y"
  • "Run this and show output"
  • "Simplify. Remove X"
Spend 5 minutes reviewing. Do not auto-approve everything.

4 Commit and Push

Commit all changes with a clear message and push to GitHub.

Step 5 of 5

Submit Your Work

1 Verify on GitHub

Open your repo on github.com. Confirm your commits are visible.

2 Submit on Canvas

What to Submit

  • GitHub repo URL
  • Screenshot of commit history showing today's commits
  • One paragraph: What task? What worked? What didn't? Which tool?
Nothing worked? Fallback for full credit

If installs failed and the web app did not work either:

  1. Open claude.ai or chatgpt.com (the regular chat, not the coding tools)
  2. Paste your project plan from Lab 6
  3. Ask: "Break down the first task into specific files and code."
  4. Screenshot the conversation and the code it generated
  5. Submit screenshots on Canvas with a note about what happened

Full credit. We troubleshoot the install next class.

Keep building outside of class. Both tools are available anytime. Every task you complete before next Tuesday is real progress.
